How to Prepare

  • The most important thing is the notary must witness the signing, so the document should be filled out but not signed.

If the document has multiple pages, bring every page.

  • Most notaries require a current, unexpired ID with a photo and signature. Common options include:

    • Driver’s license

    • State ID

    • Passport

    • Military ID

The name on the ID should match the name on the document.

  • A notary cannot explain or interpret the document.

    You should:

    • Read it beforehand

    • Ask the document issuer any questions

    • Know what you’re signing

If you appear confused or unsure, the notary may not proceed.

  • If the document doesn’t specify, be ready to tell the notary whether you need:

    • Acknowledgment (you confirm you signed willingly)

    • Jurat (you swear/affirm the contents are true)

    • Oath or affirmation

If you’re unsure, the notary can describe each type, but cannot choose for you.

  • Some documents require witnesses in addition to the notary.

    If witnesses are needed:

    • Bring them with you

    • They must have valid ID

    • They cannot be related to you or named in the document (in most cases)

Notaries are not always allowed to act as witnesses.

  • Traditional notary fees vary by state.

You may also need to prepare for:

    • Travel fees (if using a mobile notary)

    • Additional charges for multiple signatures

  • A typical notarization takes 5–15 minutes, but more complex documents may take longer.

Arriving prepared helps everything go smoothly.
